Service Types

Discovery offers five standard service types, with the flexibility to create custom service types tailored to your business's unique requirements.

To view a list of service types available for use, navigate to Service Types within the Settings page.

Standard Service Types

Commercial Waste Service

A commercial waste service is a type of waste collection and disposal service that is specifically designed for businesses, institutions, and other non-residential properties. Some waste management companies provide specialized services for the collection, transportation, and disposal of commercial waste, which includes a wide range of waste types generated by businesses such as office waste, food waste, packaging materials, hazardous waste, and more.

Roll Off Waste Service

Figure 3. A Roll Off Container for a Rolloff Service

A roll-off waste service is a type of waste collection and disposal service that uses large containers called roll-off dumpsters. These dumpsters are transported to a client's location using a specialized truck equipped with a hydraulic system that allows the dumpster to be rolled off the back of the truck and onto the ground. Roll-off waste services are typically used for large-scale projects such as construction and demolition sites or hotels and football arenas, where a large amount of waste is generated over a short period of time. Some roll offs even have compactors on them to save on transportation costs.

Device Service

A device service refers to specialized devices or equipment that are used to help support other existing waste services. One such example of a device service would be a compactor monitor which is attached to an existing compactor. The compactor monitor can analyze usage and report back to an administrator various useful information.

Rental Service

Organizations may need to rent waste management equipment such as large bin containers for a variety of reasons, such as for construction sites, special events, or industrial projects. Rental services typically involve the delivery and pickup of the rental equipment, as well as any necessary maintenance or repairs during the rental period.

Doorstep

A doorstep service is a waste collection service in which trash is picked up from the doorstep or designated area of a customer's property. This service is typically used by residential customers, apartment buildings or small businesses that generate a limited amount of waste. The trash is usually carried by hand to a near-by dumpster.

How Do I Create a Custom Service Type

There may be cases where a service does not fit neatly as one of the standard service types. In those cases, you can create your own service type. To create your own service type, follow these instructions.

In our example, we will create a service type for a bulk item removal service that charges a flat service rate in addition to a per item charge.

  1. Navigate to Service Types within the settings page.
  2. Click on New.

  3. Provide a Name and Description for your new service type.

  4. Next, provide a Service ID Prefix. In our example, we will prefix our bulk trash pickup services with the acronym BTP.

  5. Select a Line Item Category from the dropdown menu. In our example, we will choose Scheduled Disposal as our line item category.

  6. Provide a Service Description. In our example, I will include the material type, pickup schedule and vendor name. This is how the service will be described everywhere it appears. You may use the follwoing variables in your service description, although they are not required.
    • {{bin.quantity}}
    • {{bin.size}}
    • {{bin.type}}
    • {{bin.size_metric}}
    • {{bin.material_type}}
    • {{vendor.name}}
    • {{pickup.by}}
    • {{pickup.schedule}}

  7. Here is where the service description appears in the service view page.

  8. Select a Waste Generation Type from the following options.
    • Does Not Generate Waste: Select this option if the service type will be used for non-disposal services
    • Measured Waste: Select this option if the service type will be used for disposal services and a weight will be provided on the vendor invoice for each pickup.
    • Estimated Waste: Select this option if the service type will be used for disposal services and the pickup weights will be estimated based on bin quantity, bin size and pickup frequency.

  9. Turn on/off the Services have a physical bin setting.
    • Turn on to enable collection metrics and equipment details.
    • Turn off to disable collection metrics and equipment details

  10. Turn on/off the Services will be on a schedule setting.
    • Turn on if the service type will enable scheduling.
    • Turn off if the service type will not enable scheduling.

  11. Complete the Billing section by toggling the following settings on or off.
    • Include a base/flat charge - Services can have a standard fee for each invoice
    • Include per unit charges - Services can have a per unit charge
    • Include per occurrence charges - Services can have a per occurrence charge

  12. Provide a Client Invoice Service Description. This format will be used when grouping line items on the client invoice. You may use the follwoing variables in your service description, although they are not required.
    • {{bin.quantity}}
    • {{bin.size}}
    • {{bin.type}}
    • {{bin.size_metric}}
    • {{bin.material_type}}
    • {{vendor.name}}
    • {{pickup.by}}
    • {{pickup.schedule}}

  13. THE FOLLOWING STEP IS ONLY REQUIRED IF THE SERVICE TYPE INCLUDES A BASE CHARGE.

    Since are service type includes a base charge, we will also need to provide a Client Invoice Base Charge Description. This is the format that will be used to describe the base charge on the client invoice. You may use the follwoing variables in your service description, although they are not required.
    • {{bin.quantity}}
    • {{bin.size}}
    • {{bin.type}}
    • {{bin.size_metric}}
    • {{bin.material_type}}
    • {{vendor.name}}
    • {{pickup.by}}
    • {{pickup.schedule}}
